AeroPress Paper vs Metal Filter: Which Suits Your Routine?

Start with the filter size your brewer needs. Then compare the coffee you prefer, cleaning and the cost of keeping supplies on hand.

About this comparison: We researched manufacturer guidance and an Australian Amazon listing. We have not tested these filters hands-on. No current Amazon price, stock guarantee, customer-rating claim or discount is used here.

First check Standard versus XL

AeroPress’s Australian guidance lists Standard filters for Original, Clear, Go, Premium and Go Plus brewers. XL needs the XL size. The Standard and XL stainless filters are also separate sizes. Check the brewer’s exact name, not just the word “AeroPress” on the accessory packaging. Manufacturer compatibility guidance.

If you own another brewer, do not assume these round filters fit it. A conical pour-over dripper, a coffee plunger and an AeroPress use different filtering arrangements. Buying a bulk pack in the wrong size is not a saving.

The flavour descriptions above come from AeroPress, not our tasting results. A preference for one style does not make the other a poor product. Keep your usual coffee and recipe consistent when you decide what you enjoy.

When paper may suit you

Consider paper if you already like your routine and prefer keeping a supply of disposable filters. Before ordering, count the filters you have and estimate how long the next pack will last. Include delivery: a cheap-looking small pack can have a higher delivered cost per filter than a larger pack.

The Australian Natural Paper Micro-Filters page identifies Standard compatibility and distinguishes XL filters. Confirm pack size and the variant selected when ordering; a product title alone may not describe the item currently chosen.

When reusable metal may suit you

Consider a reusable filter if you want to avoid replenishing paper and are willing to wash the filter after brewing. Check its condition and fit before each use, following the manufacturer’s instructions. Storage matters too: a small loose accessory can be easy to misplace when travelling or packing up a kitchen.

AeroPress’s guidance permits top-rack dishwasher cleaning of its stainless filter. Follow the instructions for the exact accessory you buy; a third-party filter is not automatically covered by AeroPress’s own directions.

Compare costs using your own prices

For paper, use: delivered pack price ÷ usable filter count. If you use two filters per brew, multiply that result by two. Include any delivery charge that applies to your order.

For a simple reusable-filter comparison, divide its delivered price by the paper-filter cost avoided per brew. The following numbers are invented planning inputs, not current retailer prices:

  • Assumed paper pack: $12 delivered for 300 filters → $12 ÷ 300 = $0.04 per filter.
  • Assumed reusable filter: $24 delivered.
  • At one new paper filter per brew: $24 ÷ $0.04 = 600 brews to offset that initial purchase.

This simplified example excludes water, cleaning, replacement and your time. At five brews a week, 600 brews takes 120 weeks. A different pack price or a lost metal filter changes the outcome. “Reusable” does not establish a particular saving without the inputs.

What to check before checkout

  1. Match the filter size to the exact brewer.
  2. Check whether the listing is one filter, a multipack or a brewer-and-filter bundle.
  3. Confirm seller identity and whether the part is manufacturer-made or third-party.
  4. Compare the delivered price and expected use, rather than the discount label alone.
  5. Check current stock, delivery to your postcode and return conditions.

Common questions

Can an AeroPress Original use XL filters?

No. Use the manufacturer’s Standard-size guidance for Original; XL is a separate size.

Does a reusable filter automatically save money?

No. Compare its delivered price with the paper costs you would actually avoid, then allow for cleaning and replacement.

Will a metal filter taste exactly like paper?

AeroPress describes a difference in how oils pass through. We have not independently tasted or measured these filters.
