Is It Actually a Black Friday Bargain? Five Checks Before You Buy

Black Friday and Cyber Monday can be useful when something you already need drops to a genuinely better price. They can also make an ordinary product feel urgent because a timer, percentage or bright sale label is attached to it.

Living well for less is not about avoiding every purchase. It is about buying deliberately. Before adding a sale item to your basket, make these five checks.

1. What was the usual price?

Look beyond the displayed “was” price. Compare the current offer with the price you have seen recently and, where possible, check more than one retailer. A dramatic percentage is less important than the amount you will actually pay.

2. What is the total delivered cost?

Include delivery, accessories, refills, filters, subscriptions or other items needed to use the product properly. A cheaper appliance can become the more expensive option if its ongoing requirements cost more.

3. Does it solve a problem you already have?

Write down the job you expect the product to do. If that job was not important before the sale started, the discount may be creating the need rather than meeting it.

4. Will it fit your home and routine?

Check dimensions, storage space, power requirements, noise, cleaning and how often you will realistically use it. This matters especially in rentals, apartments and small kitchens.

5. Can you return it easily?

Read the returns conditions and warranty details before buying. Keep a copy of the product description and your order confirmation, particularly for an item promoted with a time-limited discount.

The Living Well 101 rule

Finish one sentence before checkout

I am buying this because it will help me ________.

If the answer is clear and the price checks out, the sale may be useful. If the answer is mainly “because it is discounted,” leave it for 24 hours.
